T is for Timing Counts

Oh dear, this world is based on timing. Did you know? Well if you didn’t you must live a very luxurious life and for that I currently despise you.

How many weeks of vacation you get.
What time to eat lunch.
What time to pull the cookies out of the oven.
What time you get to write.
What times the kids should go to bed.
When to finish your first draft.
How long it takes you to finish.
When to send out your query letter.

I am a firm believer that in the writing world it comes down to a lot of hard work and a little luck. Timing is luck. Timing is everything.

Of course doing your research is also equally as important. As a whole you must take your time to make sure all your ducks are in a row. So be sure to take those cookies out of the oven… the warm gooey center is the best part.

What is your take on timing?

I agree - timing is everything. And even though we can control it. A big aspect of timing we have absolutely not control over. Have a great weekend.

Um, time doesn't exist? It's all reletive, really, innit? ;o) Have a great Easter, Jen! I've missed you. Haven't seen you around my blog at all this month :(

I'm so sorry, I forgot what this post is about after reading the words warm gooey cookies. :)

Heehee, jk! Timing IS everything. Unfortunately it's one of those things that can't be controlled in the ways we would want it to. That'd be a cool super power: controlling time!

Happy a happy Easter, Jen!!!

Yeah, timing is one of those elusive things where we can try to control our end, but have no idea what's going on in everyone else's world. I wish every agent/publisher came with a "okay...give that to me on May 27th at 3:00 pm, please. Then I'll accept it." Have a great weekend!

Some days seem to last forever and others go way too fast, with little time to accomplish any of the items on the to-do list. I'm constantly complaining about needing more hours in the day. Mostly for more writing. Someday I know I'll look back glad I spent the extra time with the kids though! Cookies are a great idea. Happy Easter, Christy

Timing is everything, and the one thing there is just never enough of, at least for me.

Ha! my timing is always, always, off. Too early, too late, etc. And that gives me a story idea...
I suppose timing is a little like luck; you can't always control it, necessarily, but you can work at it and be alert to opportunity.

I think with that, sometimes we just need to be patient. There is a right time for everything and sometimes it's not now. But waiting can be hard.

I always say timing is everything. Even the name of my blog is "In Time ..." You can only plan for so much then you just have to go with the flow...

I think it's a lot about timing. Preparedness meets opportunity type of thing.

my take is there's no perfecting it when it comes to writing. It's all serendipity. :D Here's to both of us hitting it just right. And share those cookies, girl~ ;p <3

I think timing is super important. I think we have to be ready when the right opportunity comes along.

Timing can make the difference between a dream fulfilled or a lost opportunity.

Timing can make a huge difference. I try to get things done so I'm ready for when the time is right. :)

There never seems to be enough of it & others seem to have more than they need. Guess it all comes down to planning and comprimise. Stop in & read T is a Twofer

It's not just in the writing world that timing counts. But I also believe that we can make our own luck every now and then.

Great post!

Like you I would like to live in a world where the super importance of time didn't exist and the only deadline I had was to my editor.

Ugh, timing is so important yet it really just isn't always something we can control. Good post Jen. I'm off to toss out my watch for the day:)

Timing is key in a humorous story. It's hard to get it just right for a laugh.

I asked a superior at work about his advice on promotion. He said, Work as hard as you can, do the best job you can and be in the right place at the right TIME. So true...timing is everything.

Timing is vital. Sometimes it's easy to feel like your behind, especially when you compare to others. I guess what I mean is you have to respect your own timetable too.

Timing is everything, but I believe each person has an unique destiny, so that the "perfect timing" for one person is never the same as "perfect timing" for another. So you can never judge your own progress or lack thereof by the "clock" of another.

This is why I never cook - my timing is appalling! Boo... Gets you thinking though - get the timing right and the rest starts to fall into place (or so they tell me). Maybe you can train in this... like being a jedi or something... Happy weekend

I avoided Time for T for the A-Z and took the time to revisit Twyfelfontein. Well, why not? Something different.

Timing is truly everything. You can hardly do anything that doesn't involve timing, from sex to buying a car. Timing is life.

Timing is everything. The publisher you really want suddenly needs to fill an empty space on the schedule. Your manuscript is at the top of the heap and fits the need perfectly. Your book comes out and gets promoted in conjunction with the book of a superstar! You're on your way. In the other scenario, the book is at the top of the heap, but there's no open slot. You get a letter saying, sorry -- love your style but it doesn't fit our needs right now!

Timing is everything!

Unfortunately timing is a huge part of my world. Every moment seems to be devoted to everything. I need a me time!

Timing IS important... and it's one of those factor we have no control over. So why worry about it? I figure I do the best I can and maybe the rest will fall into place.

Jen, I've awarded you the Versatile Blogger award. Come by to pick it up!

I always get jittery when I have time restraints. For me the worst is the timing involved in cooking a meal for guests. I get obsessive and write down every little detail. In fact it takes longer to work out the timing than it does to cook the meal.

I don't know much about timing but I know that I need more time during the day. And my body tells me I'm hungry a lot more than I think it should.

Timing is absolutely everything. It's the magic combo of preparation and luck. :)

My take is that I absolutely agree with your take. One not only needs to take the time to write, but also make sure all those cookies and ducks get time. Research, editing, promoting, revising, rewriting... There's a lot more time to account for than just time for writing. Timing matters when that much in involved!

I learned from MamaGena at the School of the Womanly Arts that "My Timing is Perfect and Elegant"...which calms me at times when I feel hasty or urgent. Time is my collaborator, when I invite that. When I put my watch on in the morning I ask that Time and I work to my Highest and Best purpose on this day.

Time for bed!
Love, Suzi

Time is the fire in which we burn... no, wait, that's not right.

There's never enough time to get things done in, and yes, trying to match your effort to the timing of an opportunity can come down mostly to luck.

I just showcased your blog because I couldn't think of much else to do for 'U' in the A-Z challenge! I wonder if I won't be the last to try that trick.
