Cover Curious

So I know that they say not to judge a book by it's cover but we all know that sometimes that just isn't possible.

When I'm looking for a new read I normally check out the blogs, you all seem to know what you're talking about. However there are times where I just can't find what I want. I'm searching for something but I don't know what it is... it's the feeling, the wanting based on the cover alone.

I walk the book stacks at the library and come up empty. I want the fresh smell of my very own BRAND NEW book. So I make my way to Barnes & Noble and I walk, the noises quieting down the closer I get to that one book.

Do you know that feeling?

Below I decided to add some covers and I'm curious if you'd purchase them based on the cover art. I'll leave my opinions out (because it's my blog and because I can) but I'm curious as to what you'd choose!

Poems & Flowers? What's not to love!

Crazy Hair - Paper on fire - Why not?

Curious aren't you?

This one pulls at the heartstrings.
 So what would you choose?

Sorry, none of those entice me, but they're not my genres of choice, either.

Skipping a Beat is the most enticing, but honestly, I probably wouldn't pick any of these up to even look at the backflap. But I also think they are not what i"m typically drawn to.

I'm very much a judge-the-book-by-the-cover kind of gal. If I see a beautiful cover, I can't help myself.

I like all of those!!

Definitely Skipping a Beat. That is one awesome cover. i don't even think I'd read the blurb!

Tough one, none really jumped out at me...sorry!

A few of them, especially the one with the upside-down Barbie. Hee...what the heck is that all about??

From the cover art I'd choose Skipping a Beat, but the one I already bought was Charlaine Harris's new book, but because of the author and not the cover, which I thought was a little silly...

None really jumped out at me either...but then I tend to go for authors I know as opposed to book covers alone (although I do like the look of some).

I'd pick Skipping a Beat because the hedge looks like it could be the outside of a labyrinth but other than that none of these are really my kind of cover. My favourite type of cover is a central image with a plain background e.g. Matched, The Body Finder.

I love me a good cover, but they would also have to belong to the genre I'm interested in.
None of these appeal to me much cos they are not from the genre of my choice. But pretty covers :)

Just for the record, if I had to choose, I'd go with Charlaine Harris, but not cos of the cover alone.

I'm a book cover/blurb combo girl--have to look and read both b/f making a decision.

Not too crazy about the second cover.... but the others are great!

I do judge books by their covers but none of those jumped out at me. I read mainly mysteries though so I like something a bit dark and, um, mysterious. :)

None of these appeal to me, but i'm guessing they're not from my genre of choice--I'm not a romantic. I prefer male protagonists or a VERY strong female. I guess I'm not much of a "judge a book by its cover" I prefer an exciting synopsis. Well chosen words speak to me more than a single picture (though their have been a few exceptions, like the cover of The Opera Ghost Lives by Ann Kraft or James Hannibal's books.) I also like a good book trailer (James Hannibal's Wraith is AWESOME!!!)

i cheated and read the small script on the covers. I'd probably read either the stackhouse novel or the 'skipped a beat' because I'm not really into poems or memoirs. I def look at more than just the cover before spending money on a book, that's for sure. Great post!

I'd probably pick Two Kisses for Maddy. They talked about this book on one of the local TV stations here in MN recently.
Just going on the cover alone I'd probably pick Skipping a Beat.

Definitely Skipping A Beat. It's the most mysterious and makes me want to pick it up.

I do like the first one as well, but then it says poems and that doesn't interest me.

Definitely Skipping a Beat. The other's just aren't things I like to read. Not that I know what Skipping a Beat is about but it looks YA where the top one is poems, the next one not appealing, and the bottom one a memoir? A cover really does tell you a lot. I don't think it's bad to judge a book by its cover to some extent. Great post!

I don't really like any of these :( I'd pick Charlaine's, though, because I'm anxious to read that one. But I don't like the cartoonish covers of her books at all.

Just based off the covers I would choose Skipping A Beat. It is the only one that strikes my interest. I usually don't pick just based off the cover but they do play an important role in catching my eye!

Probably She Walks in Beauty followed by Skipping a Beat.

Personally, I like darker covers but if I had to choose, I'd pick Skipping a Beat.

Skipping a Beat. I like the Sookie books, but not for their covers.

Only Skipping a Beat holds a mild interest for me based on the cover.

Have a great weekend Jen!

I'm not sure I'd choose any of those based on cover alone. I want something that screams "Creepy! READ ME TO FIND OUT!!"

I pick Skipping a Beat for sure. Looks interesting. =)

The Charlain Harris book is what I would pick because of the utter distraction and almost magical accent of it all.

Sari Webb said...

I don't think I ever buy a book based solely on the cover anymore, but then again I probably won't pick up a book to find out more about it unless the cover catches my eye.

I like the Skipping a Beat cover (original, yes?) It has an Anna and the French Kiss feel to it.

I like the covers you've posted - personally covers are a big part of what draws me in to either read the jacketflap or walk on by. I LOVE the cover for WITHER. One of my faves:)

Melissa Ann Goodwin said...

Based on cover alone, only Skipping a Beat would even get me to pick it up and give it a look.

Dafeenah said...

Well, none of them really, but if forced, then the last one.

Jennifer Hillier said...

I'd pick up the Charlaine Harris book, but not so much because of the cover art, but because I enjoy her work.

Jemi Fraser said...

I'm betting I'd cry at the last one - every time there's a happy baby on the front, it's a sad book...

Skipping A Beat. 100%, I didn't even read the titles until after I looked at the pictures. I'm awful.

Talli Roland said...

They're all gorgeous - but I'm going to go with Shipping a Beat.

Meredith said...

Like most, Skipping a Beat totally grabs me. I know absolutely nothing about it, but I can tell it's the kind of book I would want to read. How funny that a cover can do that!

The Kid In The Front Row said...

I always judge a book by it's cover!

Maybe I should stop reading books altogether and just keep a collection of nice covers!

LTM said...

it's true. I totally judge books by their covers. BUT! I just learned I also do a little more than that. Because I would've passed on all of these except Skipping a Beat.

Not interested in Kennedy poems, already read too many disappointing Harris books, and no way am I reading about babies being lost... :D

Skipping a Beat wins!!! :D <3

A cool book cover gets you to turn the book over and read the blurb or at least read the first page. Or, if you read mostly e-books like me, I'll go to the first page.

I'm totally intrigued by SKIPPING A BEAT. I would open that book and read the first page.

Must admit that I'm definitely a judge-a-book-by-its-cover type of person and would probably not choose any of the above-mentioned books as they don't really stand out for me at all. However, if you had to ask me to choose a book based on its title, I'd probably go for She walks in Beauty and Skipping a Beat.

I love nice covers. A beautiful cover will get me to open the book and read the fist couple of pages :)

I like all of the covers, but I can tell the bottom two might not be the type of books I enjoy, even if they are decent. I love the Sookie books, so I am not swayed either way by the cover, although I admit I like the original art covers (like this one) rather than the reissued True Blood tv covers on some of the earlier books. The first cover I would definitely check out; I can't tell much about the story from it, and that's OK.
