Cupcakes don't hurt....

Happy Monday!!! Tomorrow is my birthday!!! WOoHoO- for those who care I'll be 25 years old. Go Me. Last week I had my query critique. It went better than I could ever expected. It has since then been revised and I've tested the waters now. That's right I've dived into the querying world. And I've been cupcaked (also known as rejected but those are hurtful and harsh words and aren't used here. I was given the word my fabulous blogger friend Karen Amanda Hooper). It's not always a negative (it's a cupcake for junk sake, cupcakes rock). When I received my first one I was actually excited. My husband and I celebrated. It's like a rite of passage. Something you have to do to realize you're one step closer to that agent. There is an agent out for you. YOUR work is good enough. Don't give up. Just take each rejection with a grain of salt. Appreciate each company for even bothering to take a look. They don't have too. They look at thousands. So the next time you get a cupcake look at it as a positive. Sprinkles and frosting how's that a bad thing. Even if it's #189 (just don't be eating them... weight will be gained and I don't want to be responsible for that), because they're looking. You two were just not made for each other. What process are you on? Do you need a pick me up?

Good luck Jen and I love your attitude. You are always so optimistic *tosses you a cupcake. .. with sprinkles (we're not being stingy here)*

Cupcakes don't hurt unless you've eaten too many and you get a stomach ache OR your waistline has expanded to the point where your jeans no longer fit OR....um. I think I'll just stop there. LOL

Happy Bday a day early!

First rejections are definitely a rite of passage! Congrats on officially joining the race!

What a great idea! Being "cupcaked" sounds so much nicer than getting rejected. I think all rejection letters need to come with a real cupcake or a cupcake scented candle as a way to ease the "Ouch" factor of getting rejected.

Happy early Birthday! And good luck with the querying process! Keep up that positive attitude. :)

Happy Birthday!

I love the term "cupcaked." I'm about ready to start sending queries on a new book, and I'm definitely going to be using the word.

mmmn cupcakes. Happy before your birthday!!! And welcome to the trenches of the query wars! I celebrated my first rejection too when I first started. It made me feel like a real writer. Two years later, it's not so fun anymore, but hey! I'm still here! SO that's something to celebrate.

Happy birthday! And I love your positive attitude! I'm going to be querying soon, so we can eat cupcakes together. :)

Happy birthday! Great attitude towards that scary query world. I will come to you when I need a pick me up. :)

I think it's so easy for other published authors to tell those who are waiting to hear from agents, don't take it personally. The majority of new authors do take it personally, though some take note and get to working on making improvements.

Have a great birthday!

Happy birthday! And congrats on diving into the query world! I hope you get the results you want--and in the meantime, enjoy those cupcakes. They are, after all, an inevitable part of the process (including after you get an agent).

Happy birthday.
And hugs for the cupcake but yay to getting in the query pool. I promise not to splash you too much :)

You're right! A rejection means you're just one step closer. We can do it!

Sort of like a swirly or being forced to serenade a fraternity in nothing but a towel eh? Welcome to the club! It is sometimes a painful process, but one where you learn the whole time. Good luck!

Happy early birthday. I love your positive, upbeat attitude. I would love to write young adult books, but I don't have the slightest clue as to where to start. I think I'm too scared of the rejection.

Jamie Burch said...

Cupcakes! I'll remember this when I get to the next level.

I started out writing short stories and it was exciting at first to get rejection letters. One even had a personal note with it! But then I realized that market wasn't for me. I'm all about YA novels now.

Good luck with your agent search! I hope you find your match very soon. Thanks for the cupcake. :)

A fairy happy day before your birthday to you! 25 wow- I'm 29. I'm glad the review of your query went well! and revisions- man it always seems like there are more to do. Cupcakes- LOL what a great way to see rejection! Have a wonderful day Jen.

Happy Birthday Jen!

I'm glad to hear that you think of it that way. Rejections are like a badge of honor as far as I'm concerned. It means you've followed through on your dream to the point where you are actually submitting.

Here's to hoping we get to hear about that first full or partial request soon!

25...ahhh I remember those days...

I have been cupcaked well over 100 times and then some. Keep your chin up!

Happy Birthday!!! I hope you have a wonderful day and enjoy lots of sweets. And 25 is a great age. (I'll turn 27 later on this year, so I know from experience. :))

And cupcakes aren't always bad. Each cupcake gets you closer to your decadent chocolate and peanut butter cake! (that will definitely be what I celebrate with when (not if) I sign with an agent). What are you going to celebrate with?

I love that you guys celebrated your first cupcake, because you're so right, it is a rite of passage and should be honored as such. I don't know of any published writer who hasn't been cupcaked more times than they can count (well, except maybe for celebrities who write memoirs!). Very proud of you, my friend. Happy to be on this journey with you.

Happy early birthday!

Melanie said...

Okay, LOVE changing the term of Rejection to Cupcake. That is brilliant. I think I will have to come up with my own word to make my R's easier. Brilliant idea. Sorry for the R, but yes, you've been initiated. Welcome to my world and I hope you hear some good news soon! Good Luck!!!

Sara McClung ♥ said...

Happy early quarter of a century bday!! (says the girl who turns way older than that this year...) I absolutely LOVED being 25!!!

Oooooo yeah, I think your first cupcake is DEFINITELY a rite of passage to be celebrated!! You have the best attitude I've ever seen about it :)

I'm in PROCESS REVISION. I love revision, but it's one of those grass is always greener things, yanno? NOW I want to be writing something new!! BUt I also heart my current WIP, so... I guess my answer is nope! I don't need a pick me up quite yet. Ask me again in a month and you'll get a TOTALLY different answer!

Jolene Perry said...

I'm in the middle of query trenches. Having an MS out is even worse than a bunch of queries ;)

I'm being really careful about researching agents etc...

It's EXHAUSTING!

Happy birthday!

And go querying! Getting cupcaked means you're putting yourself out there. I love the cupcake theme. Although the word 'rejected' is so melodramatic I have a weird like for the word.

I'm doing some editing, and then I'll be getting cupcaked along with you! But we'll get requests, too!

Happy birthday!!

I think as writers, we just have to remember that every...um, cupcake...is meant to be and that it'll lead us to great things. I know a lot of people who look back and think 'if I'd had that agent, I wouldn't be where I am today' or 'if I had been published then, I wouldn't have learned some really important lessons' etc. So just believe that everything happens for a reason and that when it does happen, it's meant to be! :-)

TRR said...

Happy Birthday, Jen! You stopped by my blog the other day to welcome me to the A-Z Challenge starting at the end of the week and I thought that was super nice! I decided to check out your blog and I'm hooked. I love to write as well and have written two romance novels (both in revisions). I'm a graduate student in history so I have very little "me" time, but you've inspired me to get back to writing stories. And The Liar Society has inspired me to get working on a young adult suspense/romance that I've had sitting in notebooks forever! Thanks again! Love your blog...I'm jealous for your cupcakes. I know what you mean about rejections. I'd LOVE to get one since that means my writing actually made it out there! Have a great birthday and can't wait for the challenge!

Happy birthday! I'm 25 too! If by 25 you mean 40.

Rejections - sorry - cupcakes can be fun. One of my cupcakes once said, "Sorry, your story's not for us. But you're writing has potential so please query us again."

That was last summer and I still think about that cupcake!
