Truth Thursdays

You know this is one of my favorites... I mean I'm seriously in love.

Why? Well I guess part of it is the fact that I get to talk about myself... I mean, who wouldn't love that?

So here are my thoughts.

1. I love vlogs. Every stop I make and see one puts a smile on my face. I have this urge to try it out... but I fear that you may think it blows, and then where would we be? (If you think it would suck less than what I think let me know and I'll consider it for November)

2. Michael Meyers terrifies me. Give me Jason and Freddy Kruger, combined they don't even touch the Halloween terror. If you visit my Halloween party with that mask (if you would you're seriously messed up) expect to walk out with bruises before you meet any guests... Jamie Lee Curtis has nothing on me!

3. My husband and I are adults now (don't worry I'll tell you why) since moving to Houston we've been without a dining room table, well now we have one. Though it's yet to really be used come december in the new apartment it shall get tons of use while I write (more or less stare out the beautiful bay windows - pictures to come).

4. Sleeping is something I cherish, but lately the dreams have been scary. That Collector that you all know and love (for those of you who don't know he's a serial killer who haunts my dreams, dying to be written) has returned, along with a new one on the loose. Oh the creepy holiday is in full swing!

5. My cooking sucks. Okay that's not fair... it's more like non-exsistent. I long to cook dinner like a normal wife (at least the stereotype) for my husband, but take-out, pizza and drive-thrus seem to be my specialities. Any ideas to help me break the cycle?

What are your truths?

Not only does my cooking suck too, but when I do cook it has to be very simple recipes! Oh and welcome to adulthood with the dining table-- the most unused surface in my house-ha!

We have a kitchen table, but our formal dining room is filled with movies and CDs. (Big surprise, huh?)

Ha! You see I'm so not into horror/scary movies I had to look up and see who Michael Myers is/was. I think I'd be scared of him too.

As for cooking...a favorite cookbook of mine is Keep It Simple:30 Minute Meals from Scratch by Marran Burros. And it's the WHOLE meal including dessert, from scratch, everything fresh. It's laid out, like your shopping list, step by step instructions and best of all the recipes are for 2 and 4 people. There are seasonal meals, meatless meals, and even a Thanksgiving menu for six,all cooked in 30 minutes!

Here are some examples of menus:
Chicken breasts in tarragon, sauteed cherry tomatoes, boiled tiny new potatoes, berries and cookies/Shrimp with apple and brandy, cucumber in yogurt-dill dressing, herbed pitas/orange sherbet/Stir-fried beef and tomatoes, vermicelli, oriental broccoli, honeydew or frozen fruit.

I can't say enough about this book. I don't know if it's still in print or not. But I recommend it for ANY busy person who longs to cook a good tasty meal from scratch. Check it out and ENJOY!

Morning, Jen. Good truths! I shared a bunch of mine on Tuesday. :p

I can relate with the dining room table. We use it a couple of times a week and does make me feel more settled/grown up.

As far as the cooking goes - I can help! I post a few recipes each month with step-by-step instructions. It's fool proof. And if you need more help, you know I'm available for telephone support. =)

I'd love it if you did a vlog in November!

It can be creepy when characters haunt your dreams . . . that's happened to me, too.

I'm not much of a cook either. I love foods though so I had to figure out some way to spend less money eating out. I started with one new recipe a month and now I'm on one every other week. It's definitely helping and they've all been good but you know it's something.

I'm intrigued by your dream. I can't wait til you write about him, get em otta your brains and onto the pages.

Jessica Bell said...

Oh my gosh. Truth five. Join the club! LOL

Joanne said...

Hm, master a few basic recipes, and then you can change them up with various new side dishes, or desserts :)

Elena Solodow said...

My truth is that I think a vlog from you would be awesomeness squared. Do it!

Melissa Gill said...

I don't know about the whole vlog thing, my computer at home blows as far as video goes. (as long as Word still crips along I can deal).

Michael Meyers is so creepy, I have nightmares about him. The head tilt, knife goes to side, then snap, he's back up and at 'em. Yep, scares the hooey out of me.

Can't help with the cooking. I usually grab something pre-prepped at Whole foods and jam it in the oven, then hope it's done. But have fun with the dining table.

I've always been the Halloween girl. I used to love Michael Meyers and Freddy movies - I could never get into the Jason ones. Just watch Halloween 3 if you want a good laugh after watching 1 and 2. It's not even about Michael Meyers and it's the dumbest movie ever! Seriously, you'll laugh; I'm not even playin'.

Ishta Mercurio said...

Hm. I love Michael Meyers, and I'm a great cook. I neglect my kitchen duties all the time in favor of writing, but that's beside the point, right?

Anyway, start with pasta. Cook some ground beef in a pot with a tablespoon or two of olive oil and once it's all brown, drain the fat off (into an empty soup can or something, not into the sink) and pour a jar of pasta sauce over the ground beef. Heat, put it on the cooked pasta, and you're good to go.

If you're vegetarian, substitute crumbled tofu for ground beef. Easy-peasy lemon squeezy.

Oh, I'm running two contests on my blog - come by and check them out!

And your Collector guy sounds scary. Do something about him, already!

Cherie Reich said...

Michael Myers is awesome! I agree he is much scarier than Freddy or Jason, but I think that's why I love the Halloween movies so much more. The mask is a bit creepy. Did you know they used a William Shatner mask for it?

I like this post because it helps me learn more about you...since I am a newer reader of yours. :)

I personally think that if a person wants to cook and bake, you have to let go of fears of failure or saying I can't do that. It's having the confidence and the desire and also the knowledge that you will fail but you will learn from the failures. :) I love to cook and bake and do pretty good at it(at least that is what everyone says :) but it's come from willingness to learn and fail and a lot of trial and error. Believe me there have been a few meals thrown out in all my years of cooking. :) In fact, just last week I was experimenting with making soft pretzels. I ended up throwing my entire first batch away. I tried it again this past weekend and they turned out wonderfully! :)

Nightmares really do suck. I have them every single night.

Congrats on the new table! :)

Happy Thursday! XX

PS Thanks for stopping by my place!

-cooking is for the birds
-Mike Myers RULZ!!! c'mon Jen. Those are the BEST H'ween flix~
-vlogs typically suck IMO. unless done by KM Weiland. Then they're like that guy on PBS who paints--instructional, yet soothing.

LOVE me some H'ween! bring it~ :D <3

Oh I love cooking and baking. I suggest a pasta dish or a casserole to start off with. I have a stuffed shells recipe on my blog that I posted a few months ago that is absolutely delicious.

Meredith said...

Yay for a dining room table! My cooking is basically nonexistent, too, but I'm starting to learn that I can brainstorm ideas for my WiP while I'm chopping vegetables, so pasta with vegetables is becoming a traditional meal for me :)

I love when I dream cool things to write about. I feel like I'm multi-tasking :) Now if only the books would write themselves while we were asleep...

It took me a long time to get my cooking skills to edible standards. Having a real table might encourage you, but I don’t think anything tops pizza.

Diane said...

I am not a cook either but I love to bake. Maybe setting your new dining room table all up pretty will inspire you to make a fancy meal occasionally.... :O)

Dionne said...

Dining tables, they are great for books and paperwork and anything else that doesn't get put away. Don't know what I would do without mine.

As for cooking, avoid it like the plague, I have been doing the wifely cooking thing for twenty years, It's not all it's cut out to be, I would rather be doing anything else, well anything but the dishes that inevitably comes after the meal. ;)

definitely try a vlog-- several other people I follow have done them recently, and it's so cool to "see" someone instead of just knowing them as the written word.

As for cooking-- I hear you. I am not keen on it, but I do have just a couple of recipes that I like, are fun to make, and everyone enjoys. You don't have to do everything. My advice is to just find a couple (literally two) and throw them in the rotation.

I LOVE MICHAEL! Oh. Gosh. Love him. He is the epitome of perfect slashery-ness. So creepy, devoid of any emotion, so scary!

We don't have a dinning room table yet. Which is funny, since I JUST brought it up with the hubs last night that we needed to seriously be grown-folks and get one.

Today's truths: I hate the cold I hate the cold I hate the cold!

Water is my least favorite beverage, but I make a valiant attempt to consume as much as possible 4 days a week.

I hate when people I don't know invade my bubble, insisting they need to be an inch from my ear to speak to me.

I LOVE your blog!

Donea Lee said...

Morning, Jen! One truth of mine - I've actually never watched a vlog. Put one on and I'll watch my very first one! I think you'd be adorable! :)

I've also been told that I'm a pretty good cook. I would love to take some gourmet cooking classes and I LOVE "Top Chef". It's taught me all sorts of fun-to-say new words: amuse bouche, foie gras, tuna tar-tar. I've got a yummy cheesy potato soup recipe that's easy to follow, if you're interested?

And in TOTAL AGREEMENT on the Michael Myers thing. He is by far the creepiest. That mask....eek! *chills* Still - he never makes it into my scary nightmares of someone trying to kill me. But, there's often a roller-coaster... I don't know why...

Yes blogging is so addictive. As far as cooking is concerned I guess you've gotta start small with something you've always wanted to try/like such as muffins or pizza and go for it. :O)
If you get a moment do pop over to my outside the box post :O) http://scribbleandedit.blogspot.com/2010/10/exploring-different-genres-outside-my.html

So, I read Michael Meyers, and I know who that is (although personally I think Freddy is way scarier) and in my head I thought about oh god what's his name... Austin Powers. I had to re-read that two times before it clicked.

LOL about cooking! I'm the same!!! Hahaha! I'm so glad I'm not the only one! :) No, I cannot break the cycle either! So sorry I'm not of any help :(

That's one truth.

Another one? I'd love to join Nano but too scared. :(

Truth: I love frozen birthday cake. As soon as I get some I toss it in the freezer before I can eat it. I think it makes the cake more moist and I like that the frosting gets crunchy.

TMI, I know. :)

PS. The orginial Halloween movie is THE scariest movie EVAH.

I don't cook either. Hubby does that. I bake. Want some virtual brownies? They'll have to do because the real ones would melt in the mail.

PLEASE! I want To do vlogs too but I don't have a camera!!

My truths?

School is killing me, slowly but surely.

I both can't wait for november but I'm terrified I won't get my words

I like pumpkin guts!

I have insomnia and get horrible sleep. When I do sleep, I have the weirdest dreams ever

I have a ton of EASY recipes for you that I love! I'm not big on spending a lot of time in the kitchen so I need healthy, easy and quick. Gotcha covered. After NaNo, remind me and I'll email you some great recipes. I have some soup and chili ones that you can't go wrong with as well as a yummy turkey meatloaf (I don't eat meat but The Hubster does on occasion). Also, do you like Salmon? Quick recipe that everyone thinks you spent hours slaving over in the kitchen!!!

Alison Can Read said...

So cute! I'm a great cook. I love it. But my cleaning sucks. I really don't care if my dog sheds all over the house...I'd rather spend my time reading than vaccuming...but others definitely mind.

I'm not as big a vlog fan. I like them when I have loads of time, but in general they take too long to watch - it's easier to read. Same reason I don't watch much TV or movies.

Anonymous said...

I have dreams like this, too. There's been one scary dude that shows up in my dreams ever since I was three. =P I almost hate that guy except that we know each other so well.

Sage Ravenwood said...

Some days I think I'm deranged. I can cook, the thing is I don't like to - but the husband insist I do. Loves my cooking...Blergh.

I have a desk and it's buried in TBR books, nothing more than an expensive storage space for the laptop. I 'love' using our dining room table to write. It's an old oak farmer's table. I love the warm wood surface, not to mention I can spread out and the window view.

My nightmares make excellent book fare.

Last but not least, I write paranormal/suspense and horror, no one would have a clue according to my blog post.

My husband once commented reading my stuff, "You scare the crap out of me." (Hugs)Indigo
