Always Anonymous, We Thank You

Fashion designers find inspiration in fabrics.

Chef's find inspiration in tasting foods.

Cyclists and marathon runners find inspiration in wide open spaces.

Photographers find inspiration in colors, architecture, and nature.

Writers find inspiration in everything. From fabrics to the people who are purchasing them, everything tells a story and we're the one's who were put in this world to share it. Isn't it an amazing thing to think about?

Question: When you tell someone you're a writer aren't they immediately open to sharing more with you?

I've never met a person who's shut down. In fact, if anything, they open up even more. Is it because we're more relatable? Something that makes these individuals safe to share their secrets with us? Do they realize we might find a story in what they're telling? Or is that what they want? For the story to be told, but they just don't have the heart to write it out themselves?

To those who will always remain anonymous... Thank you for sharing your story. It is because of you, we as writers will always carry the what if's of life. Thank you for breathing life into our words and making our characters more than just cardboard cut-outs.

Where do your ideas come from? Would you thank anyone?

I get my ideas from every where. Nature, tv shows, people on the street. You name it, I find inspiration.

Little voices inside my head that won't shut up.

I get ideas from everywhere but the majority of them come from other writing. A turn of phrase, and image, an emotion that was provoked. I'd like to thank all the other writers whose words have kept mine flowing.

It really is amazing how much people open up to writers, isn't it? I get so many ideas from conversations and people watching. Love that.

Hmm, that's a good question. For me, I've only told two groups of people that I'm a writer (1) my two sisters and (2) my brother-in-law and because both have opened up to me before, I don't really notice the difference. Except this, now they keep hounding me when my books will come out.

Not sure this has ever happened to me, but then I don't tell many people I'm a writer.

Usually they don't share things about themselves beyond what they read. I don't know why. I wish they would spill their guts. : )

I never thought about it, really. I'm going to have to pay more attention next time I tell someone new that I'm a writer and see if he/she opens up more.

I get my ideas from everywhere, you're right. News headlines, people around me, people on TV, other writers...sometimes, out of the blue! LOL

I've never noticed the difference either.

I get ideas from everywhere. Last night, after son #1's bath, he had on his dinosaur towel. He loves to play with his toy stethoscope so he put that in his ears and viola! New PB idea about a dino doctor! :)

So true, my ideas come from everywhere and everyone!

Maybe people secretly want you to write about them:) When I tell people I am a credit counsellor, the people immediately start being defensive by saying they only have 6 credit cards and continue on from there or they say they need to talk to me:) Inspiration can come from anywhere or anyone. Anyone who is a writer could probably create a story about a speck of dust and make it sound interesting! Creativity is endless

My ideas come from random things. I'd have to stand up and wave around in a circle to thank the world for being my insipration.

Ha! You're right, that's funny. People do love talking when they find out you're a writer. Kinda handy, that way.

Ideas come at me from all directions. I never know when one will hit me in face or just graze my ankle.

I have only written comparatively minor stuff, like articles, children's stories, technical stuff, and so on. I often wonder how writers of really long and complex novels get their ideas. I'm reading The Pale King, by David Foster Wallace, right now and am amazed at all the twists and turns of this man's mind. Where does all this stuff come from, how did he think of that, I wonder.

Where don't I find inspiration? Thank you, world! :)

Inspiration comes from everywhere. I like to people watch, especially when I'm shopping, trying to figure out where they are going, where they have come from. You can get some ideas about a person by what you see in their shopping cart.

The world around me. It can be anything and doesn't always end up the way it started out.

Love this post. I get ideas from the most random places. One of my professors gave me a fantastic idea for a new series that I've set aside while I work on something else, but I know I'm going to be super excited for it once I actually start working on it.

Bizarre situations and things that kids come up with are also a huge source of inspiration to me. I like thinking out of the box and making it work. You'll find that most of my books have a twist to them that you wouldn't expect, but that is perfect for the story :)

Huh...actually I got more people opening up when I was a social worker, go figure! :D Yeah, there's inspiration everywhere!

I wish I had more real people to draw from. Most of the stuff I write comes from all the weirdos living inside me. It's almost a way of exorcising them out, so they no longer have power over me. But that's not to say I don't pull from reality, too.
